What is an apostille, and when do you need one?
An apostille is a certificate that lets an official document issued in one country be used in another country that is party to the Hague Apostille Convention. It replaces a chain of consular approvals.
Who issues apostilles in Türkiye?
It depends on the document. Governorships and district governorships issue apostilles. For judicial documents, the justice commission presidencies in places with a heavy penal court are responsible.
In what order do translation and apostille happen?
The order depends on the document and the destination country. Sometimes the original needs the apostille, sometimes the notarized translation. Ask the receiving institution what it requires before you begin.
If the country is not party to the Convention
The document is first certified by a governorship or district governorship, then by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, followed by any steps the destination country requires.
